Swimming

This activity is a great form of low impact aerobic activity, so is great for your back as it doesn’t add any increase pressure. The water supports your body so any stress that you may feel during normal physical activity will not occur. You don’t have to limit yourself to just swimming in, as walking, resistance work, and classes such as aqua aerobics are also low impact. Fancy doing some resistance work on your upper body? Then buy some hand paddles or webbed gloves, you will soon notice the difference. On our fitness holidays we regularly do aqua aerobics with lots of different intensities, it’s fun but can be tough too

Walking or Hiking

Walking is a great low impact activity that can be done easily and anywhere. The physical benefits include strengthening of muscles, plus there are lots of cardio benefits if you go for longer periods, walk up hills, or do a brisk walk, but there are also mental benefits too. Being in the outdoors is a great stress reliever, and we know this because we always arrange a beach walk on our Portugal Boot camp

Cycling

This is a great activity that is not only non-weight bearing but will enable you to push yourself a little more and get your heartbeat racing. You also have the option of going outside for a bike ride in the fresh air, or inside, with spinning classes being very popular amongst health clubs. You can also get your own spin bike and do online workouts if you preferred to work out at home

Resistance Training

Many people are scared to lift weights as they think they may harm your back. In fact, if you do certain exercises correctly, then they will help to strengthen your back muscles, and decrease the chance of you getting injured in the future (if you are new to weights I would recommend asking your club for a fitness programme so you can check your technique). If you would like to do home workouts then there are lots of options on YouTube, and you can easily buy some bands off Ebay

At our fitness & weight loss bootcamps we include the majority of the above exercises, as we firmly believe that there are options for everyone to be involved in physical activity, and that it can help in the future management of pain

Depending on your back pain and the cause, not all of these exercises will be suitable. So, I would advise to see a specialist before commencing any exercise
