How To Avoid Gaining Weight At Christmas

During the Christmas holidays, many people experience weight gain, and then regret it after and spend months trying to shift the weight

The easiest thing to do is to try and not gain the weight in the first place

Here are some tips to help you through the Christmas period…..

 

Keep active with family and friends

Many traditions involve sitting around watching tv but try and mix this up with activities such as walking, cycling, or even playing an active game on the games console. If you don’t try and keep a balance, then being inactive combined with the overeating during Christmas will lead to weight gain

Snack wisely

Snacking is a common occurrence during the holidays, and many of them tend to be unhealthy. Try and limit these snacks as many treats contain unhealthy fats and added sugars. Aim to keep up with your fruit and veg snacks, and maybe try making your own Christmas snacks. They will definitely be healthier than buying from the supermarket

Watch Your Portion Sizes

Eating large portion sizes means you will gain weight, plus you will also feel tired and grumpy – is it really worth it?

Best way to limit portion size is to use smaller plate 

Practice Mindful Eating

Eating in front of the tv?

Eating on the way to the office?

Multi-tasking whilst eating?

You are more likely to overeat if you are not paying attention to what you are actually eating, as you won’t recognise when you are full

Take 5 minutes out of your day and enjoy your food! Also chew thoroughly and slowly and don’t rush

Get Some Sleep

Not having enough sleep can lead to weight gain

Studies have shown that those who don’t sleep enough tend to be hungrier, eat more, and exercise less. It’s also been linked to having a slower metabolism

Reduce Your Stress Levels

Christmas can be stressful, and stressed people tend to have high levels of cortisol, a hormone that’s released in response to stress – and yes you guessed it – this can cause weight gain

Try to keep your stress to a minimum, using exercise, meditation and yoga

Have Balanced Meals

Meals and snacks over the xmas period are typically high in carbohydrates but low in protein. Protein is vital as it reduces hunger and helps with weight management, and try to keep simple carbs to a minimum as they will send your insulin levels all over the place (another thing that can cause weight gain)

Good sources of protein include meat, poultry, fish, and some plant foods like beans and quinoa.

Include Fibre

Do your best to eat fibre rich foods such as vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. They help to keep you full, plus eliminating the need to overeat

Limit Desserts

Most desserts are very high calorie, so pick wisely.

Enjoy your favourites but in small amounts, and not every day!

Limit Liquid Calories

Christmas is a time when everyone drinks more alcohol, and indulges in sweet drinks

Alcohol is empty calories and will cause weight gain. If you are drinking then think of low-calorie options such as gin & tonic, vodka & soda

Also be careful you also don’t indulge to much on the sweet drinks from Costa Coffee and McDonald’s, these are high calorie and are loaded with sugar

Avoid processed foods

Try and cook as much as you can from scratch. Items like boxed mash potato and stuffing have lots of excess sugar and unhealthy fats

Make it an activity and bake snacks and make mince pies, rather than buying them ready to eat. This way you will know what’s in them

Skip seconds

Calories from extra helpings can contribute quickly to weight gain. Limit yourself to just one plate, and meal prep the rest of the food – you don’t need it now!

Relaxation

7 Night Residential Portugal Fitness & Weight Loss Holidays

Our female only 7-night all-inclusive Portugal Retreats are more focused on weight loss and transformation. Your stay with us is for 7 days and includes a specialist team available 24/7 to give you support and advice on every aspect of your life, from fitness & nutrition, to general lifestyle tips to keep you on track once you leave us. A Boot camp holiday in Portugal with Motivate Bootcamp is a fantastic week away that can help you to improve fitness, lose weight, and give your body the kick-start it needs

Our bootcamp holiday is ladies only and is located in the beautiful Albufeira within the Algarve region. It varies from a lot of our competitors in that it is a holiday too and you get lots of time to enjoy the surroundings and relax, we are also a lot more affordable. We also include optional trips to local towns like Vilamoura and activities such as paddle boarding, surfing, jeep safari, and boat trips

We have a few options available including all inclusive, Vegan, & self-catering, and they all offer an unforgettable experience. Over 70% of our clients come year after year

Our all-inclusive and self catering bootcamp retreats are based at a fabulous villa on the outskirts of Albufeira (approx. 10 minutes’ drive to the old town and marina or 35 minutes’ walk). This is a 7-bedroom villa with a pool and is recently fully refurbished, and is one of our smaller group retreats, perfect for those looking for a bootcamp holiday with a more personal touch (10 people max).

With the All Inclusive option we takeover our own chef who makes all the meals/snacks fresh daily. With the  self-catering retreats it gives you flexibility on food, and there are large supermarkets nearby where you can do a food shop, we help you with choices. We also arrange evening meals out to local restaurants and we also host BBQ nights which make it a great social event and gives a holiday feel to it

Our days vary and consist of fitness sessions and workshops in the morning, followed by the afternoon off to relax, head out and explore, or to have massages (our masseuse comes in throughout the week), then early evening we finish with a few more sessions including Yoga/Pilates to finish. Then it’s time to relax and eat onsite on head out in the evening. This is what makes it more than a bootcamp, it’s a holiday too.

Portugal Bootcamp 2018

We are pleased to announce that we will be adding an All Inclusive Bootcamp to our already popular Self -Catering Bootcamp Retreat next year in Portugal!

 

The set up of the week will be the same in terms of fitness sessions and healthy workshops, with the main differences being the venue and the All Inclusive option

 

The Venue

With the self catering bootcamp taking place in a set of apartments, which is perfectly suited to this type of bootcamp as each apartment has its own kitchen, we needed to change this to suit the needs of the new bootcamp. We have decided that a luxury villa in Albufeira is the perfect venue, with exceptional lounge rooms and bedrooms accommodating both twin and single supplemency. It also has a fantastic dining area both inside and outside where we will be eating together, and stunning gardens and a swimming pool. It really is the place where you can switch off, focus on yourself, and have a fantastic week away from everything

 

All Inclusive

We will be taking our Chef over from the UK – and they will be responsible for creating all of the meals/snacks ready for everybody at set times throughout the day. This will enable all the meals are fresh and healthy, and created to help you achieve your goals. Our Chef has over 15 years experience in the UK and is also involved with healthy eating campaigns too, which makes him a perfect fit for the bootcamp.

Packing for your Bootcamp can be a bit of a nightmare and it depends on a number of things, especially the weather and the type of Bootcamp you are going too. I guarantee that your kit list will be different if you were going to Portugal or Spain in May than if you were going to Manchester in December. Most companies will provide you with a general kit list, but to help you along (and for our boot camps too) then here is a typical guideline

 

The essential kit list for any Bootcamp:

  • A decent pair of trainers – make sure these have been worn in (I tend to get mine from Sports Direct – you don’t need to spend a fortune)
  • Gym kit – plan for both inside and outside and be sure to pack a few t shirts, shorts, jogging bottoms, and sweatshirt/hooded top
  • Loungewear for the evening
  • Smart wear for the evening if you are planning on eating out
  • Underwear and socks
  • Toiletries
  • Hairdryer
  • Medications
  • Water Bottle/hydration bag
  • Rucksack (most boot camps tend to do a walk)
  • Blister packs
  • Hiking boots (check to see if a walk is included – on our Mount Snowdon and Scafell Pike walk these are essential)
  • Jacket (light waterproof would be ideal)
  • Gloves/hat in winter
  • Swimsuit (Bootcamp retreats that have pool/spa access – like our Manchester)

 

Additional Kit for Bootcamp’s in Europe (may also need for UK if we have a heat wave)

 

  • Swimsuit/beach towel
  • Sun cream (high factor – I use factor 50, exercising with sunburn is not pleasant)
  • Sports Sunglasses and cap
  • Flip flops

We are putting on our first 5 day UK Bootcamp in Cornwall in September

 

We have decided that North Cornwall is going to be our venue, at Hengar Manor Country Park, St Tudy, Bodmin. Our Cornwall bootcamp retreat is ladies only and on an all-inclusive basis, which means that all your meals/snacks are catered for whilst you are there, enabling you to focus on yourself! (sorry no mars bars or crisps cravings will be catered for).The bootcamp will be run similar to our other bootcamps, it will be non military, with a fantastic variety of fitness sessions and workshops, with the emphasis being on having a perfect kick-start and having fun (whilst losing those important inches/pounds at the same time). We will aim to do approx. 20 sessions over the 5 days (maybe more depending what mood I’m in, and I do take bribes) but don’t worry about them, all sessions can be adapted so are suitable for everyone. PS yes I love BURPEES and these will be a daily thing – no excuses – you will learn to love them!

 

Cornwall Bootcamp 2017 | 5 days | Ladies-Only Motivate BootcampThe location is key here! and the main reason we chose this area is my love of the area. Growing up I came to Cornwall every year and loved it, and even now I try to head down to the area at least once a year. I’m a beach boy at heart so the beaches and relaxed atmosphere are what brings me back time and time again, so hosting a bootcamp here is my ideal venture! Within Hengar Manor County Park we have 35 aces of land to use, and fantastic accommodation. These will be in lodges and based on either a shared twin room or a private double room. The majority of lodges have 2 x twin and one double, and are nice and spacious with a large lounge and kitchen dining area. If booking as a group there is also the option of upgrading further and booking a lodge that comes complete with a hot tub! what more can you ask for 🙂 . It is a great social experience too and you are guaranteed to make friends for life (many of our bootcampers rebook time and time again with people they met)

 

Cornwall Bootcamp 2017 | 5 days | Ladies-Only Motivate BootcampThe facilities on the park are brilliant, and they include an indoor swimming pool/spa, tennis courts, amongst lots of other activities which you can join in with. In the evening you can enjoy the nightly entertainment, or why not just relax outside your lodge and watch the world go by (maybe even have a glass of prosecco, you will have deserved it!)

 

We do like to give people some downtime too (see I am a nice guy really), as coming to a beautiful part of the country wouldn’t be right without checking out the local area. There are some great beaches and local towns all within 30 minutes drive of the venue, perfect for an afternoon of relaxation. There will also be the option of adding an activity to the week, and we will be partnering up with a local surf school to bring you a discounted afternoon of fun for those who wish to take part. (Great fun, we added paddle boarding to our Portugal Bootcamp and they loved it)

This is a great venue for our Manchester bootcamp weekend and suits us perfectly. Over the course of the weekend you will have lots of activities to give your body the perfect kickstart. There will be a variety of fitness classes and also workshops on nutrition and healthy living

Within the hotel we have executive rooms which are either private, twin, or triple family rooms – and these are all en-suite (some even have a Jacuzzi bath). We have use of a large function room which is air conditioned, and this is where the indoor classes take place, and although the hotel is near a residential district it also has great surrounding areas for us to do outdoor sessions

Evening meal and breakfast are included within the bootcamp weekend, being served in the fantastic on site restaurant, giving you lots of choice. There is also an onsite bar where everybody can relax at the end of the day (light alcoholic drinks are allowed, well deserved!)

The pool/spa are a great extra included in this bootcamp, with full use of the Spindles Health Club included in the cost. Perfect for relaxing the muscles at the end of a hard day
